In an update to its next-day delivery offering, Target is lowering the price of its Target Restock program from $4.99 to $2.99 per order and making the service free for Target REDcard purchases. The changes comes as the service has been expanding to reach more customers in the U.S., TechCrunch reported.
“Our guests love the speed and convenience of the service,” Target’s Senior Vice President of Digital Dawn Block said in a statement. “And now that Target Restock is an even better value, we think the service will become increasingly popular.”
Through the program, consumers can purchase 35,000 household items, such as paper towels or snacks. And, in comparison to Amazon’s Prime Pantry, Target Restock doesn’t require a subscription for its free-shipping option. Amazon, for example, charges a fee of $7.99 per order to consumers who don’t pay a monthly fee of $4.99, which allows purchases of more than $40 to ship at no charge.
The news comes about a year after Target opened its testing of this service to its REDcard customers in the Minneapolis area, which is in the vicinity of the retailer’s headquarters. In an effort to challenge Amazon’s Prime Pantry and reinvent itself in the eCommerce driven marketplace, Target Restock launched a similar deal to its customers but at a cheaper price point. Though Amazon allows consumers to fill up a 45-pound box for just $5.99, Target did the same weight for delivery but at $4.99 per box. To help expedite its services, Target fulfilled orders from nearby stores rather than far away warehouses.
Targer’s Chief Information and Digital Officer, Mike McNamara, commented at the time on Target Restock and what it means for consumers. “Target Restock is all about making the Target Run easier — helping our guests save time in their busy lives. We look forward to seeing how guests in our hometown market respond to this new offering.”
